| AICE pulls an ace for 2007 awards show Chicago Sun Times - 5/21/2007, by Lewis Lazare Kudos to Optimus/Chicago President Tom Duff and the entire Chicago chapter of the Association of Independent Creative Editors for putting on a classy awards show Thursday at Navy Pier. The event honored the best work in editing of commercials from AICE chapters in major markets across North America, including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Minneapolis, Dallas, San Francisco and Toronto. For the record, in the Chicago market, editor Carlos Lowenstein of Cutters won for his work on a two-minute Hallmark Cards commercial called "Taxi" from Leo Burnett/Chicago. It's a pity the entire leadership of the Chicago Creative Awards (the pathetic annual awards show for the local ad industry) couldn't have been there to get a few tips on how an awards show should be done. It helped immeasurably, of course, that some 600 edit house professionals and guests at the AICE show were a respectful audience who actually paid attention during the announcement of the winners and screening of the winning commercials. What was even more pleasing was the opportunity each winner was given to make remarks as they picked up their award on stage. Not all the comments were memorable, but they added a wonderful and unpredictable dollop of human interest to what otherwise would have been merely tedious. A high point of the evening was the induction of Bob Sinise into the AICE Hall of Fame. Sinise is the father of actor Gary Sinise. Among his many other accomplishments, Bob Sinise was honored for founding one of the first independent advertising edit houses in Chicago in the early 1960s. |
